Terms & Conditions

Rent A Camper NZ — version 2026-09-24. These are the terms of hire that the quote, the invoice and the booking form name.

These Terms & Conditions apply to the hire of our campervans in New Zealand. By making a booking, signing the rental agreement, paying for the rental, or taking possession of the vehicle, the hirer agrees to these Terms & Conditions and the specific conditions stated in their Rental Agreement. Our rental service operates in accordance with applicable New Zealand laws and regulations, including requirements administered by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA).

1. Rental Agreement & Rental Period

A separate written Rental Agreement will be provided for each booking, specifying the vehicle, hirer, authorised drivers, rental dates, collection and return locations, charges, insurance arrangements, and other applicable conditions. The rental period begins and ends at the date, time and location stated in the Rental Agreement. The campervan must be returned by the agreed date and time unless an extension has been approved in advance.

2. Minimum Driver Age & Licence Requirements

The minimum age to hire and drive our campervans is 18. Drivers aged 18 to 20 must hold their own comprehensive motor-vehicle insurance for the hire and are responsible for all damage to the vehicle and any related loss; our insurance options are available to drivers aged 21 and over only. All drivers must hold a current and valid driver licence appropriate for the vehicle, be authorised and listed in the Rental Agreement before driving, and comply with all New Zealand road rules. Overseas visitors may drive in New Zealand if they meet New Zealand's driver-licensing requirements. New Zealand law requires every driver to hold a valid driver licence (16 is the minimum age to obtain one) and sets no minimum age for motor insurance; the 18 and 21 year requirements above are our own hire and insurance conditions, not legal limits.

3. Authorised Drivers & Use by Others

Only the hirer and additional drivers specifically approved and listed in the Rental Agreement may drive the campervan. The campervan must not be lent, sublet, or driven by anyone not listed as an authorised driver. The hirer is responsible for ensuring all authorised drivers comply with these Terms & Conditions.

4. Vehicle Condition, Safety & Inspection

We will provide the campervan in a safe and roadworthy condition. The hirer should inspect the vehicle at collection and report any existing damage or defect before departing. The campervan must be returned in substantially the same condition as received, allowing for reasonable wear and tear. The hirer must immediately notify us of any safety or roadworthiness concern during the rental period.

What the cleaning fee covers

The cleaning fee is a general clean after the van comes back: a sweep through, the bedding and duvet washed, the bathroom wiped down, and the fridge emptied and cleaned.

It does not cover a van handed back with the washing-up still dirty (greasy plates, pans or dishes), grey water not emptied, the cassette toilet not emptied, or any other mess left for us to deal with. If we have to clean that up, NZ$130 is deducted from your security bond.

Other bond deductions. Where we have to put something right after your hire, the amount is our cost plus our own labour and a small admin fee, itemised on the invoice and photographed: refuelling the van (the fuel, the trip to the station, and the paperwork), an LPG bottle not refilled, missing or damaged equipment at replacement cost, a late return, and tolls, parking or infringements plus a NZ$25 admin fee for identifying the driver and passing them on. Damage that is not on the pickup photos is charged at the excess of the cover you chose; where cover does not apply (prohibited use, water crossings, roof damage), the repair is charged in full and invoiced as its own document.

5. Permitted & Prohibited Use

The campervan must be used responsibly, safely and lawfully for personal, recreational and travel purposes. Unless expressly approved in writing, the following are prohibited: racing or speed testing; off-road driving; towing; carrying loads exceeding legal limits; carrying more passengers than approved; commercial passenger transport; subletting or lending the vehicle; any illegal activity; any use that may damage the vehicle or breach insurance conditions.

6. Fuel

The campervan will normally be supplied with a full fuel tank. It must be returned with the same fuel level. If returned with less fuel, the hirer may be charged the reasonable cost of restoring the fuel level + admin fee $80, together with any applicable fee stated in the Rental Agreement.

7. Insurance & Hirer's Liability

Before entering into the Rental Agreement, we will offer the hirer vehicle insurance as required under New Zealand rental-service regulations. The applicable insurance option, exclusions, liability and excess will be clearly stated in the Rental Agreement. Standard damage excess of what the hirer has chosen as insurance may be applied, unless another Complete option is selected. Drivers aged 18 to 20 cannot purchase our insurance options: they must hold their own comprehensive cover (proof required before pickup) and remain liable for any damage or loss not covered by it. The hirer may be responsible for loss or damage not covered by insurance, including circumstances arising from unauthorised driving, prohibited use, negligence or breach of the Rental Agreement.

8. Accidents, Damage, Theft & Emergencies

The hirer must notify us as soon as reasonably possible of any accident, damage, theft, breakdown, or loss of keys. In an emergency, call 111. Following an accident: stop safely, contact emergency services where necessary, exchange required details, notify us as soon as possible, and cooperate with the Police and insurer. Rental Assistance: 027 945 6289. The hirer must not authorise major repairs without our approval unless immediate action is necessary to protect people or prevent further damage.

9. Breakdown & Mechanical Problems

If the campervan develops a mechanical, electrical or safety problem, the hirer must contact us as soon as reasonably possible and follow our instructions. The hirer must not continue driving if doing so may be unsafe or cause further damage. Where a vehicle cannot continue its journey due to a mechanical problem, we will work with the hirer to arrange an appropriate solution.

10. Traffic Infringements, Parking, Tolls & Charges

The hirer is responsible for all legally payable fines, infringement fees, parking charges, tolls and other charges arising from use of the campervan during the rental period. Where permitted by New Zealand law, we may recover applicable infringement fees and permitted administration charges from the hirer.

11. Campervan Equipment & Accessories

The hirer is responsible for the reasonable care of all equipment and accessories supplied with the campervan, including fridge/freezer, cooking and gas equipment, water systems, electrical systems, solar and battery systems, furniture, bedding, and keys. All equipment must be used safely and according to instructions provided. Damage or loss resulting from misuse or negligence may be charged to the hirer.

12. Smoking, Vaping, Pets & Prohibited Activities

Smoking and vaping inside the campervan are prohibited. Pets or animals may only be carried with our prior approval. The campervan must not be used for illegal activities or in a manner that creates an unreasonable risk to people, property or the vehicle.

13. Alcohol, Drugs & Driver Safety

The driver must not operate the campervan while impaired by alcohol, drugs, fatigue or any other condition that makes driving unsafe or unlawful. The hirer is responsible for ensuring all authorised drivers are fit and legally permitted to drive.

14. Early Return

If the campervan is returned before the agreed end date, the hirer must notify us. Unless otherwise agreed or required by law, early return does not automatically entitle the hirer to a refund for unused rental days.

15. Extension of Rental

Any extension must be approved by us before the original return date and time, subject to vehicle availability and payment of applicable additional charges. The hirer must not retain the campervan beyond the agreed return time without our approval.

16. Cancellation

Cancellation fees, deposits, refunds and applicable deadlines will be clearly stated in the booking confirmation and cancellation policy. Nothing in these Terms & Conditions excludes or limits any rights the hirer has under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or other applicable New Zealand law.

Instant Booking Grace Period: Cancellations made within 24 hours of booking incur a $0 fee, provided the booking is made at least 30+ days before the scheduled pickup date.

Minimum fee: the deduction is never less than NZ$50 in the standard season or NZ$100 in the peak season, so a late cancellation of a short hire still covers days we could not re-let.

  • How the deduction is applied: we apply the deduction from the schedule above once your cancellation reaches us, based on how long there is between your cancellation and the scheduled pickup. We decide whether your dates fall in the peak or the standard season, and the amount retained and any refund are confirmed to you in writing.

17. Breach of Terms & Recovery of Vehicle

If the hirer seriously breaches these Terms & Conditions, uses the campervan unlawfully, allows an unauthorised person to drive, or uses the vehicle in a way that may invalidate insurance, we may take reasonable steps to terminate the rental and recover possession of the vehicle.

18. Rental Operator Information

Our rental service operates under the applicable NZTA Transport Service Licence (TSL) requirements. Emergency / Rental Assistance: 027 945 6289.

19. Privacy & Personal Information

We may collect and use personal information reasonably required to process the booking, verify driver eligibility, administer the rental, manage insurance and claims, comply with legal obligations and recover lawful charges. Personal information will be handled in accordance with applicable New Zealand privacy laws.

20. New Zealand Law & Consumer Rights

These Terms & Conditions and the Rental Agreement are governed by the laws of New Zealand. Nothing in these Terms & Conditions is intended to exclude, restrict or modify any rights or obligations that cannot legally be excluded under New Zealand law, including the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and the Fair Trading Act 1986.

21. Customer Acknowledgement

By signing the Rental Agreement or accepting the campervan, the hirer confirms that they have read and understood these Terms & Conditions, provided accurate information and valid driver-licence details, understand the applicable insurance and excess, understand who is authorised to drive, agree to comply with New Zealand road laws and these rental conditions, and agree to return the campervan at the agreed time and in the agreed condition.
